As a transplant infectious diseases physician and head of the transplant center at the University Hospital Zurich, I am involved in the daily care of our vulnerable patients. This work drives my commitment to advancing our field through both clinical practice and research.
My initial research focused on viral infections in animal models of allo- and xenotransplantation in the laboratory of Dr. Jay Fishman at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Since my return to Switzerland in 2003 the clinical and basic research focus has been on the role of latent herpes virus infections in the immunocompromised host. As chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study I oversee many nationwide and international research projects.
